The „Floating University“ – Kerala/India
The Makers For Humanity together with partners worldwide and on location cocreate a modular floating island to develop and portray the benefits of productive floating islands.

And it will be the poor people and vulnerable communities on the coastlines and river banks worldwide, that suffer climate change most and therefor will need new perspectives for livelihood and appropriate solutions to adopt the regional climate change effects.
In the coming decades, we will witness the rise of new floating ways of living anyway.
This dystopian but realistic future scenario drives the ongoing art process of Joy Lohmann and the interdisciplinary NGO Makers-For-Humanity. Since their first upcycled floating island for the world fair EXPO2000 in Hanover, the international collective focusses on floating islands, low-tech and open-source, modular and multifunctional. To artistically illustrate the upcoming catastrophies and at the same time to develop and provide appropriate real-life solutions for the people in need. In 2015, they came up with the „Open-Island“ construction principle and presented full-scale prototypes on local water bodies as their proof-of-concept in Ahmedabad/India and Berlin/Germany.
To date, the Makers4Humanity have implemented Open-Island prototypes for shelter and culture, energy and agricultural production, as well as for water restoration and nature reserves in different climate zones and local contexts. The „Open-Island“ construction principle was presented at the documenta-fifteen art-fair and the COP27 world cöimate conference, it has won the social-art award 2021 and was portrayed within the coínema movie „Träum weiter“ (Valentin Thurn, 2021) as well as in books and articles.

Schnellstart der Floating University
Auf der Explorationsreise im Januar 2026 konnten wir nicht nur wertvolle Kontakte zu Partnern und Fördergebern in Bengaluru machen und die Kunstbiennale in Kochi erkunden. Wir lernten auch den ortsansässigen Hausbootbauer Raj kennen, mit dem wir nicht nur die Vision schwimmender Siedlungen teilen, sondern auch das spätere Betreiberkonzept erarbeiteten. Und im Flow entstand auch direkt die erste Schwimmplattform, die mittlerweile auch einen genehmigten Standort in öffentlichen Gewässern hat und im nächsten Schritt zu einer schwimmenden Werkstatt ausgebaut werden soll.

Kerala hat eine jahrhundertelange Tradition der Urbarmachung von Marschland durch Kanalisierung und ebensolange Erfahrungen im Bootsbau. Die heutigen Hausboote sind eine Weiterentwicklung früherer Transport- und Wohnschiffe und werden von unzähligen Touristen besucht und bewundert.
